Summer Learning Opportunities

2023 FCPS Summer Learning Information

Many students participate in summer learning opportunities to advance academically, to sharpen their skills, to learn something new, or to participate in fun fine arts and Career and Technical Education camps, institutes and academies. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) summer learning opportunities include a Credit Recovery Academy that offers credit recovery courses, intervention classes, and test remediation classes; programs and institutes at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology that provide credit accrual and enrichment opportunities; and Online Campus courses and classes. Career and Technical Education will offer Self-Directed Economics and Personal Finance. 

Elementary and secondary Fine Arts and Career and Technical Education enrichment camps, institutes and academies will also be offered. Information about additional programs will be posted as it becomes available on the FCPS Summer Learning webpage.

Some of these programs have scholarships available and may offer fee assistance, especially for students that qualify and receive Free & Reduced Lunch; please ask them if you need financial assistance.

Tech Adventure Camp: Grades K – 6

Summer Learning for ESOL Students: Grades K – 12, FREE Online class on Language and Literacy Connections for English Learners (Els)

This free online class provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to engage in thematic lessons in an online environment with an ESOL teacher. In this class, students continue developing their academic and reading and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher. This class is pass/fail only and fulfills the online requirement toward graduation.

Credit Recovery Academy (Grades 7-12)

Summer Learning Online Campus (Grades 7-12)

Middle and high school students who meet the course prerequisites can take one online course. Students who have completed a high school math course may take an online campus math class. Middle school students who expunged a high school math or Spanish course or those wanting to recover a course credit may take the course again.

Extended School Year ESY Services

Extended School Year (ESY) services are provided to students, grades PreK thru 12, whose individualized education program (IEP) team decided that the benefits the student gained during the regular school year will be significantly jeopardized if the student does not receive ESY services.  All ESY services and transportation are provided free of charge as a part of the student's access to a free appropriate public education (FAPE), in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).

VIP – Value In Prevention (V.I.P) Camp

Your teenager is a Very Important Person. Sign them up for a summer of fun and leisure at Value in Prevention (V.I.P.) Camp! V.I.P. Camp is designed to encourage teens to develop healthy and positive recreation interests and features a wide variety of leisure activities and programs. 

This camp is sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools and Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, guaranteeing a quality program for your child. To be eligible, participants must be rising middle school students attending FCPS or a resident of Fairfax County. Current 8th grade students may enroll in NCS’ Teens In Action Program.

Below, please find other opportunities not sponsored by FCPS, but are resources advertised by Fairfax County.  Please note, that some of these summer opportunities may also have scholarships available, so please feel free to ask if you need financial assistance for any of these programs.  Most of the sites below offer translation so you can view the information in different languages.

Rec-PAC

Rec-PAC (Pretty Awesome Children), operated by Fairfax County Park Authority, is a six week structured recreation program with emphasis on leisure skills designed for elementary school children.  Participants will have an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of activities such as: fun and fitness, indoor and outdoor games, team sports, nature, crafts, storytelling, sports festivals, talent shows and supervised play sessions. Each location has a ratio of 1 staff person to 18 participants.

Neighborhood & Community Services

Offers a variety of out-of-school time programs & sports to keep Fairfax County kids and teens engaged outside of school hours. We provide a safe, structured environment for promoting social connections, commitment to learning, health, wellness, and individual growth. Whether it's on a school day or during summer, spring or winter break, our Out-of-School Time Programs are designed to support the ongoing and well-rounded learning, development of Fairfax County kids and teens.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

NCS' Therapeutic Recreation Services is committed to providing services, education and resources to meet the needs of participants and assist them on the road toward lifelong participation and enjoyment in recreation and leisure activities. Staff provide support and advocacy to individuals who wish to participate in general recreation activities.  Therapeutic Summer Camp Registration 2023 begins Wednesday, April 19. Camp sessions will run June 27-July 14 (ages 5-12) and July 17-Aug. 3 (ages 13-22).
