The Region Outstanding Secondary New Teacher is selected from each group of pyramid level winners and is a finalist for the district level award. The overall 2021 FCPS Outstanding Secondary New Teacher is chosen from this group of finalists. 

Mr. Yan was surprised during class by Stone Middle School administrators and our Region 5 assistant superintendent, Ms. Baenig, who presented him with this recognition and award. His students were there to congratulate him and show their support.

His colleagues had these words to share - 

"Mr. Yan has made diversity in curriculum a focus this year. He has made great effort to ensure that multiple voices are represented in the history curriculum. He engages with the staff in discussions about representation and equity, and has been an important voice in addressing the current issues that impact our historical curriculum."

"He puts great care into planning engaging lessons for the students, and in sharing his skills with the CT so that all students at Stone Middle School benefit from his expertise and talents. Especially during this difficult time, when so many teachers are struggling to engage students in a distance learning environment, Mr. Yan has shown that he can adapt to a new teaching environment and build capacity in his co-workers to do the same."
