Student Testing

Information about testing at Stone Middle School

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) Information

Virginia legislation requires growth assessments for Grade 3-8 students beginning in fall 2021.

For fall 2021, VGA will address content that was taught in the previous school year. The purpose of this fall’s VGA is to identify potential learning gaps resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. There is no “passing” or “failing” outcome for the VGA. Results will provide a starting point to measure growth and will offer information about areas of strength and areas for growth in reading and mathematics.

Students at Stone MS will be assessed on the following dates:

  • October 5 (Math)
  • October 7 (Reading)

As a result, our schedule will be a little different on each of those days, students should report to their 4th period (Panther Block) class to begin the day.

Science 8

May 9 - 10, 2023

Makeup tests will be administered on an as-needed basis upon students' return to school.

It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child have a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. If you become aware of an unavoidable conflict that could result in your child missing a testing day, please notify us as soon as possible.

The purpose of SOL testing is to provide information about student achievement to the parent, school, school division, and state. Scores will be available to families in SIS ParentVUE after the test window ends.

Retake Permission

The Virginia Board of Education allows elementary and middle school students who fail their spring Standards of Learning (SOL) tests by a narrow margin to retake the test before the end of the school year. Retesting is available when a student fails their first SOL attempt with a score of 375-399.

Parent/guardian permission is required for the school to retest any student in grades 3-8. If you believe that your student would benefit from a second opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the spring SOL test, please complete and submit the permission form below. A decision not to allow retesting will not impact your student’s course grade or academic record.

A form must be returned for each student in grades 3-8.

If you have questions about SOL testing, please contact your child’s counselor or the School Test Coordinator, Victoria Powell at @email
